Jindal Stainless: Steeling India’s First Hydrogen Train

Jindal Stainless has supplied nearly 40% of the stainless steel required for India's first hydrogen-powered train, marking a significant contribution to the country's push for cleaner and more sustainable rail transportation.

The company supplied premium austenitic stainless steel grade X5CrNi1810, produced at its Jajpur and Hisar manufacturing facilities, for the train's fabrication. Designed with a hydrogen propulsion system, the train is a key step in Indian Railways' efforts to adopt low-emission mobility technologies.

Stainless steel has emerged as the material of choice for modern railway coaches due to its corrosion resistance, high strength-to-weight ratio, crashworthiness, fire and impact resistance, durability, and recyclability. Its lightweight properties also improve energy efficiency, making it well-suited for next-generation rail systems powered by hydrogen.

The project underscores the growing role of advanced materials in enhancing the safety, efficiency, and lifecycle performance of railway infrastructure while supporting India's broader transition towards sustainable transportation.
